I’m Mike Tarvin, from Tarvin Plumbing Company. Today we’re going to talk about how to turn off your water. If you’re watching this video because your water is running somewhere and you’re trying to figure out how to turn off the water, we’ll get right to it. If you live in an older home, one of the most helpful things to know is “where’s my water meter.” The water meter is generally located on the front wall of the building. Go to your water meter. Next to the meter, there should be two valves. You want to use the valve that’s on the house side, or the flow side of the water meter and turn it clockwise if it’s an old gate valve like this one here, or a globe valve. Either of those valves, grab the handle, turn the handle clockwise until the water stops.
In a newer house, you may have what’s called a ball valve. A ball valve has a lever type handle, and all you have to do it turn the handle a quarter of turn to have the handle be perpendicular with the piping in the “off” position. Again that’s perpendicular to be off, and parallel to the turned back on.
In a house where you don’t have a water meter insight, you’re going to look for a pipe on the front wall of the building somewhere. If the front wall of that building is finished, you might be looking for a closet or some type of an access panel to try to find the ball vale or the globe valve inside of the wall. At any rate, if you were trying to turn your water off, we hope you were successful. If you need any help, call us at Tarvin Plumbing.
